  1. Basel, or Basle (French Bale) Financial,
  2. commercial, and industrial city in
  3. Switzerland; population (1987) 363,000. Basel
  4. was a strong military station under the
  5. Romans. In 1501 it joined the Swiss
  6. confederation and later developed as a centre
  7. for the Reformation. It has the chemical
  8. firms Hoffman-La Roche, Sandoz, and
  9. Ciba-Geigy (dyes, vitamins, agrochemicals,
  10. dietary products, genetic products). There
  11. are trade fairs, and it is the headquarters
  12. of the Bank for International Settlements.
  13. There is an 11th-century cathedral (rebuilt
  14. after an earthquake 1356), a 16th-century
  15. town hall, and a university dating from the
  16. 15th century.
